Rose Butler: Tent at Millennium Galleries
Head to Millennium Galleries until 24 June to experience the outdoors, indoors in a new film inspired by travel. Travel and travelling has provided inspiration for generations of artists and Sheffield-based artist, Rose Butler continues this tradition with a contemporary twist in her film, Tent. Tent takes its inspiration from the exhibition Travellers’ Tales that was on show at the Graves Art Gallery during summer 2006.
The tent seen in the film was designed and inspired by young people from Abbeydale Grange School and Firth Park Community College in Sheffield. The tent itself represents the ideas of travel and journeying. Rose filmed the tent in several locations relating to travel, including a beach and the countryside. She initially ‘flattened’ the original scenes into 2D form by making the film entirely from photographs. In the film, Rose created patterns that flow across three screens as the camera rotates throughout the film. Trees, people and the tent fall into view only to mirror, merge and separate.
Rose Butler recently completed a Masters Degree in Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University where she was awarded a distinction. She is currently a lecturer at Chesterfield College of Art. Her most recent collaborative piece of work, One Lime Street, was based on the Lloyds building, London and was commissioned by Arts Council, England and the Site Gallery, Sheffield. In 2004 Rose won a Digital Video Becks Futures Student Award for her multi-screen animation, Platform.
